Since the beginning of 2023 (to the end of September), more than 114 million people have become internally displaced around the world, which is a new record, indicating the "inability of the international community to resolve conflicts," according to a report by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
The main factors of forced displacement are the conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Myanmar, as well as a combination of drought and floods in Somalia and the protracted humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
"The humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip is now in the center of the world's attention — and rightly so. But all over the world, too many conflicts are spreading or escalating, destroying the lives of innocent people and forcing people to leave their homes," the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi is quoted in the report.
According to him, the inability of the international community to resolve conflicts or prevent new ones "leads to population displacement and suffering."
